Greeley

One of my paternal Great-Great-Great-Grandmothers was Nancy Greeley whose family is descended from an immigrant called Andrew Greele who arrived in Massachusetts about 1638.

The genealogy of the Greeley family is published in Genealogy of the Greely-Greeley Family by George Hiram Greeley (pub 1905).   This book can be accessed  and read online through the Open Library project.

  2. Ron Elder's avatar Ron Elder says:

HORACE GREELEY (1811 – 1872) was editor of the New-York Tribune which was among the great newspapers of its time. Long active in politics, he served briefly as a congressman from New York, and was the candidate of the Democratic and Liberal Republican parties in the 1872 presidential election. He was defeated by President Ulysses S. Grant on Election Day, but died before the casting of the electoral vote. (Wikipedia)
From early times Ivan Elder recalls the Elder family speaking proudly of their connection with Horace Greeley who was a 3rd-Cousin of Samuel Carr through his mother Nancy Greeley. Perhaps in the process of reintroducing her to her American roots Edner’s cousins pointed out well-known figures in their family tree.
