Eunice Keller had a sister called Orinda. The Chronicle reports of 1887 had mentioned a brother George who was a merchant sea captain and who had assisted her in the search for Samuel Carr in 1867. They had also mentioned a nephew called Weston White whom Eunice Keller had asked to assist in the search.
Both the 1850 and 1860 Census records for the Keller household show an Orinda White living with her children in the Machiasport ME home of Eunice Keller’s parents Matthew and Hannah Keller:
Matthew Keller 54
Hannah Keller 50
Orinda J White 23
George E White 1
The marriage of Orinda J Keller to Samuel L White is recorded on 17 October 1847 at which time she was 19 years of age. Matthew and Hannah Keller are named as her parents, so this was Eunice Keller’s older sister, born about 1827-8.
The 1860 Census record shows a second child in addition to George:
Matthew Keller 64
Hannah Keller 59
Orinda J White 34
George White 10
Weston R White 7
It can probably be assumed that this is the nephew Weston White referred to in the San Francisco Chronicle article of 28 April 1887 who was sent by Eunice Keller to investigate a sighting report on Samuel Carr:
“… poor Weston White, Mrs Carr’s unfortunate nephew who too zealously searched for Carr while he was in Nebraska.”
There is a Weston Reade White (Age 22, Birthplace Mass.) listed in the electoral rolls for the 8th Ward, San Francisco County in 1875 who may well be the same man. This would either confirm his presence in San Francisco on his commission from Eunice Keller or suggest that he was already living in San Francisco when she called upon his assistance.
Orinda (Keller) White died at the relatively young age of 38 on 15 Jan 1866 in Dracut, Massachusetts, USA. In three successive years Eunice Keller suffered significant losses – her father Matthew in 1865, her sister Orinda in 1866 and her husband and her three children in 1867.
I understand George White b 1850 died of consumption in 1862
